The Green planet radio program has been broadcasting from Auckland's sky tower for 4 years now and this has been a very stimulating and information rich time for me as a presenter and I trust for you as listeners.

It is now also streamed from the web on www.planetaudio.org.nz or www.holisticliving.co.nz this takes us to a global audience, which I trust inspires individuals, families and communities where-ever they may be on our marvelous planet, to consciously work in peace to a sustainable and better world of tomorrow.

And how things have changed, especially over the last year where we have come to a realisation that the monetary ways of man has been eaten away by the tapeworm economy, which lacking any virtue has been built as a house of cards. This house is now having its foundations eroded away from it, and we need to be very astute in reading behind the headlines, and accessing our information from alternative news sources. We need to be proactive in researching both the challenges and the solutions to our current dilemma.

And though the economic essentials are currently overriding the dogged headway we have made in environmental awareness over the last few years, it is crucial that we bring balance to both these two imperatives as we move towards sustainability. The urgency can only be understood from the knowledge of deep ecology in that the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat comes from the environment. Its source springs from a healthy living planet. And it is vital that we connect the dots by thinking things through to make the connection.

Mysteriously enough it is worth noting, that the words ecology and economy share the same root – from the ancient Greek word Ecos, which translates to meaning house or habitat. Economy refers to how to manage our house and Ecology how to know or understand it. They are two sides of the same coin, and one day soon I trust we will have politicians and business people, embrace this knowledge and take appropriate and urgent action to bring about a new understanding of our relationship to this living planet that loans us bodies in which to live.

Last year I said that: "We are at a juncture in the earths evolution where solutions are urgently required to find ways to avert the consequences of not being truly conscious of our inter-relationship with ecological concerns, and all biota ... and especially that we be mindful of the billions of children that across the face of our planet are in need of love and leadership as they look forward to their yet un realised future."

So what has quickly emerged in the last year across New Zealand has been the term transition towns - transition towns now number 43 across the country and are gathering momentum, very much like the Nuclear free zones that sprang up across New Zealand back in the mid 1980s to counter the lunacy of the nuclear arms race that was escalating at that time.

Transition Towns is an initiative for our times, where community at grass roots levels is springing forth a leaderless movement to respond to the twin challenges of climate change and peak oil, but can now be seen as an instrument to peacefully react to the global economic fall-out that is regrettably gathering impetus … as well as act, as a back-up civil response in the case of an earthquake or tsunami if such unfortunate occurrences happen.

These transition town groups are popping up in towns, suburbs, islands, communities and regions and the aim is to relocalise communities making them vibrant, resilient and truly sustainable. And what pulls them together are permaculture organic gardens for producing food and "living economies" where localised currencies such as green dollars and time banking, can assist the community to remain cohesive and peaceful during times of transition and hardship. So I encourage you to research and seed the idea of a transitional town in your locality. It's such a positive affirmation of what conscious people can achieve. And very necessary in times ahead.

And let us think and discuss innovative ways to promote solutions for our individual and collective future with both our friends and neighbours. Where we move forward as a nation modelling the virtues of sustainability.

GreenplanetFM interviews Steffan Browning, Spokesman for Organic New Zealand

Steffan has been at the forefront of the New Zealand organics movement for twenty years. His successful Bio-Gro horticulture business won both the Horticulture and Supreme awards in the Marlborough Rural Environmental awards in 2003.

His aim is to have genuinely sustainable organics in NZs food, fibre, forestry and fishing industries - which he states, "also makes good business sense."

He has also been active in the green political party narrowly missing out on entering parliament last month.
