How do I know if my child has nits? The biggest sign is lots of head scratching, particularly behind the ears and at the nape of the head. Small head lice may be moving about in the hair. Nits, which are the lice eggs, are small, oval and whitish opaque in colour. These are attached to individual hair strands, live ones close to the scalp and dead ones further down the hair strand. They are easier to see when the hair is wet. What do I do if I find them? Try to be as matter of fact about it all as you possibly can. Be sensitive to your child’s feelings i.e. avoid discussing it loudly with other parents in front of them.
Head lice are easily spread so it’s advisable to keep your child at home, away from other children until clear, this helps to stop the lice from doing the rounds, and helps to keep schools, kindys and playgroup environments lice free.
ASAP, get yourself something to treat the head lice and a good nit comb, one that removes both nits and lice. To buy our natural nit oil and combs call 09 372 8751.
Once treated, the most effective way to permanently remove head lice and nits is regular combing with a nit comb. Wet your child’s hair, use a little conditioner for easy combing and gently comb the hair with a nit comb. Work from the scalp down the length of the hair until you have combed the whole head thoroughly. Do this once a day until you no longer see any nits.
Treat the whole family. This can actually be fun, get your child to comb your hair as well, pretend to be monkeys in the bath or shower together looking for lice, anything to lighten up the fact that you are looking for lice and combing hair, which, lets face it, can be a challenge on it’s own!
Wash all bedding, hats, clothing and anything else which may have been in close contact with your child’s’ hair (car seat covers etc). This helps prevent spreading and reinfestation. You can also leave items in an overheated room for a few days; lice will hatch and die as long as there is no host to hop onto!
To catch any reinfestations before they get out of hand continue to comb once a week and check for lice/nits until epidemic stops.
Old nit eggs can be removed by combing with a little cider vinegar, this unglues them from the hair.
Schools and communities worldwide are now starting to have “lice free” weeks where they get all families to participate in lice combing for a set time, to stop epidemics. This has proven to be more effective than using chemical lice killers, and safer for children’s’ health. If you are interested in being part of a lice free week please contact us now:

Natural Nit Oil instructions
Chemical lice killers are not necessary and are extremely dangerous for your child’s health, it has been found that repeated use of strong pesticides adversely affects the immune and nervous systems, weakening your child’s health and leaving them more susceptible to illnesses.
To treat two people with short/medium length hair, mix:
- 100ml base oil (almond, olive, or sunflower oil is good)
- 1ml Rosemary Essential Oil
- 1ml Lavender Essential Oil
- 1ml Geranium Essential Oil
- 1ml Tea Tree or Manuka essential Oil
(20 drops = approx 1ml) (From Neal’s Yard Natural Remedies book) Ensure essential oils used are pure and 100% natural as synthetic fragrances do not contain the constituents that kill and repel the lice and nits.
For a larger, family sized amount add to 1 litre of base oil 10 ml of each essential oil. If this is kept in a sterile, sealed, glass jar in a cool dark place this mixture will keep for up to a year.
1. Wet hair slightly and massage approx 2 tablespoons of Natural Nit Oil blend through the hair. 2. Leave for two hours (long hair can be tied up). 3. Comb carefully with nit comb then shampoo out. 4. Repeat two days later, then a week after this. Step 4 is imperative due to life cycle of the head lice
