Soapnuts

Soapnuts- clean the green way

Soapnuts are dried berries from the sapindus mukorossi tree growing wild in Northern India. Soapnuts contain saponin that is released when wet, creating mild soap suds.

The berries have strong antibacterial properties that effectively replace chemical laundry detergents, household cleaners, soaps and shampoo.

Using soapnuts is cost effective, it costs as little as 12 cents per wash. It also saves water, there is no need to do a final rinse in the washing machine, and if you have the ability to reuse water, use it in your garden, soapnuts are a natural pesticide.

They are great for people that have allergies to regular soaps and washing powders, they are non allergenic, and are great for eczema and psoriasis sufferers. Using soapnut liquid as shampoo helps with dandruff too.

They are biodegradable, compostable, have minimal packaging, and are sustainably grown.

They can be used for washing laundry, as a general household cleaner, in the dishwasher, as shampoo (great for washing pets too!), cleaning jewellery, washing the car, window cleaning, detoxifying food and has a garden pest spray.

The most popular use is as a laundry bag. To use add 4-5 soapnuts to a washbag and place inside the washing machine with the clothes.  That's it.  They can be re-used for around 6 washes before you refresh the soapnuts.  They don't leave any scent on laundry so if you love fragrance add a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil - I highly recommend Lemon and Lemongrass for a refreshing scent.

Soap really does grow on trees!
